I can’t decide if I want to admire these beauties or eat them. The images below show two sub-irrigation planters filled with bok choy and mizuna in one, and collard greens in the other.
The bok choy and mizuna are definitely ready to harvest. My god they are beautiful! And without a doubt I have to say that the DIY sub-irrigation planters I made are a complete success!
It is getting warmer here in Delaware and you can see that both the bok choy and mizuna are starting to bolt (flower in order to produce seeds). Also, with the warm weather comes the dreaded non-native and invasive Cabbage White butterflies. They lay their eggs on brassicas and their green caterpillars can decimate all of these beautiful plants in just a few short days. So it’s time to harvest. I foresee some yummy vegan Dan Dan noodles in the near future as well as a lot of salads.
I’ll wait a week for the collards as they can grow a bit more. Fingers crossed the Cabbage Whites stay clear for a while.
The planter on the right with the collards is called a City Picker. It is also a sub-irrigation planter (or wicking pot) but I bought this one from Amazon. Even though it is a good bit smaller than my 27 gallon tote planters, it is big enough to grow all those collard greens. Also…I didn’t have to build it myself and it was very affordable.
