Am I better at surface design instead of surface “pattern” design?

Something has recently dawned on me. I may be better suited for surface design as opposed to surface pattern design. Instead of creating repeat patterns I find myself fighting against the desire to create “scenes.” It happened again today. I eventually got to a repeat pattern but it definitely didn’t start out that way nor was it my inclination to do so. Does anyone else have this problem? I think the design below looks much better as a motif / spot illustration (image #2)  as opposed to trying to force it into a repeat pattern  (image #1).

Maybe it just takes more practice and a concerted effort. Maybe I need to learn more ways to create a repeat pattern then the simple techniques offered in the Immersion course. I look at more complex patterns out there and want to better understand how to create them.Time to start looking around for an in-depth course in pattern making.
