Art Licensing & Collaborations

Art Licensing

Think of art licensing as renting one of my designs for your product: fabric, wallpaper, stationery and more. You may use the design for an agreed period in specific markets or regions, all defined in the licensing agreement. In all cases, I retain the copyright to the artwork.

Licensing options include exclusive and non-exclusive agreements. Exclusivity can apply to a product category (like wallpaper or stationery) or a geographic region (USA only or worldwide). Payment may be structured as a flat fee or royalties, depending on the terms.

Freelance Illustration & Collaboration

If you’re looking for something custom, I offer freelance illustration on a one-time or ongoing basis. We’ll begin with a design brief outlining the project scope, deliverables, timeline, and cost, all detailed in a written agreement. Once the work is complete, you own the copyright to the artwork. I’m available for both individual projects and long-term collaborations.

FAQ

Studio of Considered Things
  1. Request access to my private portfolio. Then start by browsing my catalog of collections, patterns, and illustrations. Choose what you love, and I can adjust details like color or scale to fit your product.
  2. We’ll finalize a straightforward licensing agreement that outlines the terms and pricing. Depending on the agreement, payment will be either a flat fee or a royalty based on product sales, paid monthly or quarterly.
  3. Once the paperwork is complete, I’ll deliver the production-ready files. It’s that simple!
  1. Tell me about your project and the type of artwork you need. We’ll define the design brief together – covering payment, deliverables, scope, and due dates. A 50% payment is due before work begins.
  2. I’ll share sketches and rough drafts, along with possible color palettes for the final design. You’ll provide feedback, and I’ll move forward with the completed piece.
  3. You’ll review a near-final design, offer any last feedback, and I’ll make final adjustments. Once you approve the work and submit the remaining 50% payment, I’ll deliver the design files and any agreed-upon materials.

  • Non-exclusive license: You can use the artwork within a specific product or market category for an agreed period of time, but I may also license it to other companies within the same category and in any region. This option works well for makers and brands seeking cost-effective access to quality designs.
  • Category-exclusive license: You have exclusive use of the artwork for a defined product or market category, but I may license it for other uses. For example, your license could cover wallpaper while I license the same design for fabric.
  • Territory-exclusive license: You have exclusive use of the artwork within a defined region, but I may license it in other regions. For example, you may hold a license for wallpaper in Europe while I license it for wallpaper in the USA.
  • Exclusive license: You have sole rights to use the artwork across all product categories and regions for the duration of the license.

Note: In all cases, I retain the copyright to the artwork.

Pricing depends on the level of exclusivity, the length of the license, the product type, and the number of items you plan to produce.

Rates vary based on project scope, complexity, and timeline. We’ll confirm all details upfront, and everything will be outlined in a clear contract. I offer both flat-fee projects and retainer options for ongoing work.

While licensing and custom illustration are my primary services, I occasionally offer full buyouts. In a buyout, you receive complete ownership and copyright of the design.

A derivative is any work based on an existing design, like a new colorway, scale change or variation on the original.

  • If you’ve licensed my artwork: You may not create derivatives without a new licensing agreement.
  • If I’ve created custom work for you: You own the copyright and may make changes, produce it on other products, or sell it to another company.
  • If you have no agreement with me: All artwork on this website and my social media is copyrighted by Studio of Considered Things and Kerry Boan. You may not reproduce, distribute, or use any artwork without written permission. Unauthorized use may result in legal action.
